INSTRUMENT RATING RATING RATING

An Instrument Rating is required to fly  under Instrument Flight Rules. Typically these are used when the weather  is below VFR.  These conditions are defined as a ceiling of less than 1000 feet and/or visibility of less than 1 mile.

Requirements                                                                                                       

bulletHold at least a private pilot certificate
bulletBe able to read, write, and understand English
bulletAt least 50 hours of cross-country flight time
bulletA total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time that include
bullet 
  1. 15 hours of instrument flight training from a Certified Flight Instructor 
  2. A flight performed under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) conditions that is at least 250 nautical miles, with at least 3 different types of approaches.
  3. At least 3 hours of instrument training within the 60 days preceding the practical test
bulletPass an Aeronautical Knowledge test
bulletPass a practical test with a Designated Examiner
